Question:One of my pregnant daughter' s blood tests shows that she has been exposed to cytomegalovirus. What does this mean? Could it cause a miscarriage?
Answer:Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are very common, and almost everyone has these infections at some time, but they are usually so mild that they are not noticed. Only in patients who have reduced immunity from othet diseases can CMV infections be a significant problem. In pregnancy, it is possible, but rare, for a CMV infection to cause a wide variety of complications, but only if the infection spreads to the developing baby. Your daughter will probably have two or more blood tests to determine whether the CMV infection is active or not. If it is active, it is possible for it to be the cause of a miscarriage, or other problems. She will need to be further advised by her obstetrician.
