Question: | I frequently get pimples or zits on my face over a week. I have heard about tea tree oil for acne treatment. Is it really an effective treatment for acne? Can it eliminate my acne breakouts completely? |
Answer: | Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, a native plant of Australia. It has powerful anti-septic and anti-fungal, antibacterial qualities.
Tea tree oil has been proven effective in topical treatment of acne. But it can only help in reducing the symptoms of acne breakouts like reddening of the skin and can not cure it completely.
Sometimes, it is used as an alternative to benzoyl peroxide which is another effective method of acne treatment. There are some side effects associated with the benoyl peroxide like irritation, dryness, hypersensitivity. So tea tree oil is used as a replacement of it.
Before using tea tree oil, you must check your skin sensitivity to it. Apply a small dose of it in small part of you skin. If your skin responds positively, only continue its use then.
The most important thing about using tea tree oil is diluting it first before using. Dilution is very important as tea tree oil is very strong and using it alone or in larger amount can cause redness, itching sensation, and blistering, making your acne problems worse.
You can also use topical acne products available in the market containing tea tree oil. |
