Question: | I want to get a tattoo. But I am really scared whether I will get infected with AIDS. What are the chances of getting infection during getting a tattoo or body piercing or if I visit to a barbers shop? |
Answer: | There is a risk of HIV transmission if the equipment used for the tattooing or body piercing is not sterilized and is contaminated with HIV infected blood.
If the equipments are not used appropriately between the clients, it increases the risk of HIV transmission. Since the equipment comes in contact with blood, it should be disposed after single use and if it is reusable, it should be thoroughly sterilized or disinfected after each use.
Ask the person who makes tattoos or body piercing about the procedures and precaution they take during tattooing- for any sort of blood contamination.
At barbers place, there is very little risk as they use disposable blades now. Infection can occur when skin is cut and blood infected with HIV goes inside due to reusable razors.
Generally, chances of getting AIDS at these places are very low, but you should always take precautions. |
