Question: | My eyes have become red, swollen and itchy. I feel burning sensation in my eyes and sensitivity to the light also. My uncle says that I am suffering from eye allergy. Is it true? What medication should I take to cure this? |
Answer: | Definitely, these are the symptoms of eye allergy. Eye allergy or allergic conjunctivitis causes red, itchy, watery and swollen eyes. The most important symptom of allergic conjunctivitis is the itching of the eyes.
Allergic conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is a mucus membrane covering white surface of the eye and lines the inner fold of eyelid. The conjunctiva acts as a barrier for different substances and protects the eyes. It is rich in blood vessels. The inflammation of the conjunctiva which is triggered by allergens like pollens and dust mites produces enlarged blood vessels present in conjunctiva and ultimately causes reddening of the eye.
You need to avoid those air borne allergens causing allergic reactions in eyes. Medication is also important to treat the eye allergy because if it aggravates it can risk your eyesight. Medication containing anti-histamines are available in the form of eye-drops (applied topically) and tablets (taken orally). |
