Recovery from anesthesia depends upon variety of factors like the type of anesthesia given, the type and duration of surgery and the health condition of the patient. Recovery from anesthesia occurs, when the effects of anesthetic drugs start diminishing and body returns to its normal functioning.
The patient is taken in a specialized unit called post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) for recovery immediately after the surgery. Nurses take care of the patients and closely monitor the vital functions.
How quickly you recover from anesthesia also depends upon lot of things like what kind of anesthesia you received and how you responded to that anesthesia and whether you were on other medication.
It takes some time in completely wearing off the anesthesia effects. A person' s age and health also plays a significant role in recovering from the effects of anesthesia. Generally, young age patients recover fast from anesthesia effects than older patients. Healthy people have fast recovery than people with some health problems.
When a person awake after surgery, he/she may feel some confusion, a sort of disorientation and troubled thinking. But, this is quiet normal with the general anesthesia. Some patient may experience less sensitivity in the area, where they were given anesthesia.
When the anesthesia wears off, you may feel some pain occurring due to the surgery done. If the pain is severe, you might require additional doses of anesthesia or some pain killer medicine. Sometimes, a person may feel nauseous or vomiting tendency, which is very common after any sort of anesthesia (especially in general anesthesia). Some patient may feel cold and shivering due to reduced body heat, which is also common in general anesthesia.
Generally, all these symptoms go after some time, but, if the problem persists, you need to consult a doctor. |
