Question: | I am taking antibiotics which include penicillin. After 2- 3 days of medication, I got rashes on my skin. Does this indicate my allergy to penicillin? What do I do now? |
Answer: | A skin rash may be the allergic reaction to penicillin. Penicillin is an antibiotic, which is often prescribed to clear various bacterial infections like ear infection, sinus infection and so on. But, this useful medication may cause allergy in some people. It can be hereditary or can develop later when exposed to it for the first time.
An allergy to penicillin may cause mild or severe life threatening reactions. In mild reaction, skin rash appears after the two or three days of starting the medication and it may exist for several days.
Severe allergic reactions occur within a very short period of time after taking it (Between minutes to couple of hours). The symptoms are severe and the person needs emergency medical services immediately.
So, you need to consult a doctor even if it is mild or severe penicillin allergic reaction. Doctor may prescribe an alternative to penicillin. You also need to be cautious in the future while taking such medications. |
