Question: | My brain seems to scramble after I' ve eaten bread. I can' t even spell correctly! Is this an allergy? |
Answer: | Thisisacommonfeature of wheat intolerance or allergy. The ubiquitous wheat can literally make you crazy, and sadly does for a large number of people. Studies in psy-chiatric wards have shown again and again that wheat and other food sensitivities can produce symptoms such as severe depression, ervousness, irritability, loss of motivation and mental blankness. Many people diagnosed with schizophrenia and other mental health prob- lems are found to have sensitivities to wheat, milk, sugar, tobacco and eggs, with wheat being the most common.
The reason for this is fascinating. Certain fragments of wheat protein, called gluten, have a molec-ular structure that' s very similar to that of chemicals naturally occurring in our brain called endorphins and encephalins. The wheat gluten proteins (and dairy proteins too) can actually link with receptors in the frontal lobes and lower limbic regions of our brain in either a stimulatory or suppressive way, and the result is a mild to severe disruption of normal brain activity.
If you suspect an allergy to wheat or any other food, avoid it strictly for 10 days and see what happens when you reintroduce it, or better still, see a nutrition con-sultant and ask for an IgG food intolerance test. |
