Question: | I am taking Prednisolone and Methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, and Thyroxine for thyroid problems. Would these drugs alter the results of an allergy test? |
Answer: | When you take steroids (such as Prednisolone) or immunosuppressants (such as Methotrexate), your immune system will not register a response to llergenic foods. Thyroxine doesn' t interfere, but as long as you are taking the others, there' s no point in taking a test. However, as almost every-one who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis as food and chemical sensitivities that might make their symptoms flare up, I can understand your desire to do a test.
What I' d suggest therefore is eliminating suspect foods - the most common being wheat, gluten (the protein found in wheat and also barley, rye and to a lesser extent oats), dairy foods, eggs, citrus fruits, tea, coffee, chocolate and soya. Start with one food group at a time, eliminate completely for 10 days, then reintroduce and monitor the results.
If all seems to be well, repeat the process with the next food group. You might also have a sensitivity to gas and exhaust fumes, so you could try avoiding these for 10 days to a month to see whether they' re exacerbating your condition. |
