Question: | What do you think about liver detox regimes? |
Answer: | At least half the body' s energy is spent in detoxifying the toxic substances it makes, plus those we consume from food, water and air. So you do need to give your body a rest from its burdens and support the liver with certain detoxifying nutrients. Some regimes on the market are gimmicky, but alongside cutting out ' toxic' foods and drinks such as coffee, alcohol, sugar and white bread, many foods are a blessing for your poor liver.
A good detox regime should emphasise glucosi nolaterich foods such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower and cabbage, and sulphur rich foods such as onions and garlic, with a big emphasis on fruits and vegetables and away from animal products, to help restore the body' s acid/alkaline balance and provide antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins A, C and E. You also need to supplement the amino acid glutathione and/or the herb milk thistle major players in the liver' s detox systems. Also excellent for assisting liver detoxification is a form of sulphur called MSM; you' ll need to take 1 to 3g a day.
Remember to drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day, too. |
