Question: | I eat soya products and try to avoid dairy. Is there any nutritional value in soya yoghurt, or would I be better of f eating live dairy yoghurt? |
Answer: | Soya has been shown to benefit our health in many ways. Researchers have found that it can protect us from heart disease by raising ' good' cholesterol and lowering ' bad' cholesterol. No less than six anticancer compounds have been found in soya beans, and high soya consumption is thought to be one of the factors helping Japanese men and women enjoy much lower rates of cancer than people living in Western countries. Soya is one of the few plant sources of ' complete' protein, containing wellabsorbed iron and calcium, B vitamins and lecithin.
For women, soya can be very helpful in balancing hormonal levels naturally Fruit yoghurts, whether diary or soya, are often laden with sugar, so go for plain live soya yoghurt and add your own fresh fruit. It' s important, though, not to rely too heavily on soya - people can become sensitive or allergic to it, and it' s also known to slow thyroid function if you eat too much of it. |
