Question: | Weight-Watchers say nuts are fattening. Do you agree? |
Answer: | While it' s true that nuts contain a high percentage of fat, that' s not the whole story. Eliminating all fat from the diet is unwise: the essential fats omega-3 and 6 actually help you burn fat more efficiently. Raw nuts contain useful levels of these good fats, as well as providing a source of protein to slow down the release of sugar from carbohydrates.
This is important because controlling weight requires controlling blood sugar, and balancing carbs to protein 2:1 is an important part of this. For most people this means eating more protein, for example having a small handful of nuts or seeds with a fresh fruit snack. See how useful nuts can be?
Roasted nuts contain damaged fats, and therefore fall into the category of those you want to avoid when trying to lose weight; others are saturated (animal), hydrogenated and fried fats. But raw nuts, for both their essential fatty acid and protein content, eaten in moderation, are a useful part of a calorie-restricted, exercise-including, supplementsupported weight loss programme. And their rich taste makes them a satisfying as well as healthy alter- native to biscuits or chocolate. |
