Question: | I have Type II diabetes. Can you recommend any supplements? |
Answer: | In addition to following a diet designed to reduce the damage caused by high blood sugar (which is what Type II diabetes is) - wholefoods rich in fresh vegetables and wholegrains, balanced with good-quality protein and essential fats - an array of supplements can help. The mineral chromium can help to regulate blood sugar, but you will need to consult your doctor to ensure it doesn' t affect your medication. If he or she gives you the go ahead, take 200mcg of chromium a day. An essential fats supplement will help to reduce inflammation to the eye area. Magnesium, manganese and zinc also help to stabilise blood sugar, and you will get these from a good-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement. Lipoic acid and vitamin E help to reduce the effects of the damage caused by the excess blood sugar, and these can be found in a good antioxidant formula. |
