Question: | I bruise really easily, especially on my thighs. What can I do about this? |
Answer: | Easy bruising is a classic sign of vitamin C or E deficiency. If you get bruises and don' t know where they came from, you need to up your intake of these antioxidant vitamins that help to keep skin and blood vessels strong and healthy. The best food sources of vitamin C are carrots, cabbage, watercress, broccoli, cauliflower, green peppers, tomatoes, kiwi fruits, lemons, oranges and strawberries. The best food sources of vitamin E are nuts and seeds, such as pumpkin seeds, or their cold-pressed oils; avocados are good too, as is wheatgerm, as long as you' re not allergic to wheat. Also helpful are bioflavonoids, which are found in blue/purple foods such as blueberries, blackcurrants, red grapes and beetroot. As well as eating these foods, try supplementing 1g of vitamin C and 300mg/400iuof vitamin E a day. The best vitamin C supplements, called C complex, also provide around 250mg of bioflavonoids. |
