Question:Every winter I get itchy red patches on my legs and arms. Can you help?
Answer:Redness and itching is more often than not a sign of skin inflammation. This tendency can be aggravated by temperature changes and cold weather as well as a diet low in antioxidant-rich fresh fruit and vegetables, which may be why you get it only in the winter. You can reduce your tendency to inflammation by increasing your intake of essential fatty acids from foods such as oily fish, nuts, pumpkin, flax and sunflower seeds or their oils. Supplementing 1,000mg of flax seed oil capsules three times daily usually helps. Vitamin C (1g three times a day) can also help reduce inflammation. Many people find relief from all sorts of skin irritations by applying MSM cream, which contains sulphur compounds; just be aware it can sting on sensitive skin at first.
