Question: | What causes varicose veins? |
Answer: | A varicose vein is a vein that has become enlarged and swollen through poor circulation; they usually show up on the legs, where circulation is most difficult. It is unlikely that optimum nutrition can do much for veins that are already varicose. However, getting adequate amounts of vitamin C (1g twice a day - get a formula with bioflavanoids or berry extracts) and vitamin E (400mg/600iu once a day), as well as other antioxidants, can help to prevent further occurrences.
There is some evidence that a high-fibre diet can help to prevent varicose veins. That means plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrains such as oats, brown rice and rye bread. Regular exercise, especially swimming, will also improve circulation, and putting your feet up and gently massaging your legs may help too. Application of vitamin E cream to the vein area, or using the oil in a capsule, can also be beneficial. |
