Question: | Do anti-cellulite supplements really work? |
Answer: | Cellulite, one of the bugbears of the beauty industry, is simply hardened fat cells that make the skin look corrugated. This happens when fat cells become loaded with saturated (hard) fat, and when the body' s ability to detoxify itself diminishes, at which point it dumps toxins out of the way in fat cells.
So the key to banishing cellulite is to cut right back on saturated fat, which means less meat and dairy produce, and increase your intake of polyunsaturated oils from seeds, nuts, coldwater fish and their oils. Then, to boost your detox potential, you have to clean up your diet by eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, organic if possible, and staying away from junk food. Drink 1.5 litres of water every day and cut out alcohol and coffee, or decrease your intake of them drastically. The liver uses a whole host of vitamins to detoxify, so a good high-strength multivitamin plus 2g of vitamin C will make a difference. Anything to improve circulation is also good news, such as swimming, massage and skin brushing.
Most anti-cellulite supplements contain small amounts of some of these nutrients. However, I doubt very much that they will make any real difference unless you also change your diet. |
