Question: | What should I supplement to stay healthy in pregnancy, and have a healthy baby? |
Answer: | Although the most famous baby supplement - folic acid - is important, there are many other nutrients that are needed for a healthy baby. Omega-3 fats, found in oily fish and flax seeds, are important for the formation of the baby' s brain and nervous system. Recent research has also shown that taking choline during pregnancy can create a ' superbrain' in the baby. Although the study was on baby rats, I' d still recommend taking choline in the form of lecithin, derived from soya. Sprinkle a heaped teaspoon on your cereal in the morning. I' d also recommend a good multi so that you get not only your folic acid (400mcg), but also a spectrum of nutrients including zinc (15mg), which is crucial for the healthy development of your baby before it is born. |
