Question: | I' ve had early miscarriages. Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening again? |
Answer: | Overall, the better your nutrition, the better your chances, so I would certainly recommend you see a nutrition therapist to get yourself in the best possible condition. Deficiencies in zinc, for example, are linked to miscarriages. So too are high levels of the amino acid homocysteine. These can be tested for (see Resources, page 483) and, if present, specific dietary supplements can be recommended to get you into good health. These will contain the vitamins B6, B12, folic acid and an amino acid called trimethylglycine (TMG), all of which have been shown to lower levels of homocysteine.
Another extremely common cause of early miscarriage is progesterone deficiency. Progesterone is the hormone that the womb needs to stay healthy. Again, a nutritionist can test if you are low in this hormone. If you are, your doctor can prescribe natural progesterone, given as a transdermal skin cream. Supplement small amounts of progesterone in this way until you are three months pregnant, by which time the placenta takes over producing the hormones necessary to maintain a healthy pregnancy. |
