Question: | I suffer from PMS and mood swings but since taking pregnenolone I feel great. Are there long-term side effects, though? |
Answer: | While pregnenolone is a naturally occurring hormone, that doesn' t make it harmless. It can be used by the body to make adrenal and sex hormones, so it can have a powerful effect. Although pregnenelone levels normally decline as we age, supplementing it, or too much of it, means your body needs to work harder to get rid of any potential excess. (In this regard, hormones aren' t like vitamins. The body is well designed to excrete excess vitamins. Hormonal levels are controlled more by reducing production than by promoting excretion.) So more is not necessarily better. Even though it does help those with adrenal exhaustion, blood sugar problems and hormonal imbalances, it really isn' t advisable to take unless supervised by a qualified nutritional consultation. |
