Question: | I keep getting thrush on my penis. What can I do to stop this? |
Answer: | Thrush, which is overgrowth of the Candida albicans fungus, is common. We all carry some Candida albicans in our large intestine, but if you eat the wrong kind of diet the fungus can get out of control. If your immune system is run down, or if your sexual partner has a low-grade infection, you are more likely to pick up thrush.
So, what should you do about it? 1 recommend a two-part strategy. Approach the problem from the outside by washing both before and after sex. Use a cream containing nystatin, which is an anti-fungal drug, locally. Three days of this should clear up the active infection. Then, be sure to keep yourself well aired. Fungi love warm, wet places, so wear cotton boxer shorts rather than tight pants. At the same time, aim to control Candida from the inside out. Boost your immune system by taking vitamin C (try 2g a day), zinc, cats' s claw and berry extracts. Control Candida in the gut by supplementing a probiotic supplement providing both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. And maintain a candida-unfriendly diet, which means no sugar, yeast, alcohol and other fermented products. |
