Question: | Does cod liver oil really oil the joints? |
Answer: | It' s no coincidence that the most popular over-the-counter remedy for relieving joint aches is cod liver oil - it really does work. But this is not because it oils the joints. Cod liver oil is high in vitamin D, which is needed for healthy bones. This was one of the reasons for its original popularity in the 1930s, as it prevented rickets and other bone problems. It has since been found that cod liver oil is a rich source of omega-3 essential fats. These fats don' t actually oil the joints as such by lubricating them, but they contain substances called prostaglandins that help reduce inflammation. Many studies have found that people with joint problems have found an improvement in pain, stiffness and swelling when they take fish oil supplements. Look for cod liver oil supplements labeled as high in omega-3 fats. You want one that gives around 400mg of EPA and DHA per capsule. Take two every day if you suffer from joint problems. |
