Question: | What' s your view on probiotics? |
Answer: | As we all know, our guts are teeming with beneficial bacteria. When we take antibiotics for an infection, or develop a stomach bug, these are wiped out, and our immune defences can become weak. Probiotics - supplements containing some of the same beneficial bacteria found in the gut - can be a good alternative to antibiotics, or at least should be taken along with them to ensure they don' t kill off all the bacterial ' good guys' . Probiotics work by helping out existing gut bacteria, and reinforcing the body' s immune defences. They can halve the recovery time from a bout of diarrhoea. Most good probiotics will contain Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidus. Some yoghurts have these bacteria too (check the label), although supplements are a more direct way to boost your defences. |
