Question: | I am breast feeding, but my periods are very irregular, is this normal? |
Answer: | Yes. While you are producing breast milk, your reproductive hormones will be suppressed by the milk producing hormones, and will not alter in level in a regular cycle to give you periods. This varies greatly from one woman to another. Some have regular periods while feeding, others have none, while most have the occasional irregular bleed.
Breast feeding is often assumed to be a form of contraception, but is most unreliable as you can ovulate and fall pregnant despite regular feeding, although the chances are reduced. |
