Question:I am a thirty year old MAN, and all my life I' ve had abnormally large breasts. I seem to gain weight only on my breasts and stomach, and my legs remain thin. I' ve tried doing weights, but to no avail. There is definitely something wrong with my metabolism. Can you help me with an answer?
Answer:There are a number of possible causes for your condition, but the one that springs most readily to mind is Cushing' s syndrome. This is a condition in which the pituitary gland in the centre of the brain, or the adrenal glands that sits on top of the kidnevs, become overactive and produce excessive amounts of steroid. The same condition can result from taking a large amount of steroid medications by mouth or injection for a prolonged time. Cushing' s syndrome causes fat to be deposited on the belly, chest, back and face, while the legs and arms remain thin. Other signs of the disease include mental disturbances, purple blotches on the skin and impotence. It is possible that there are other rare causes for your problem (eg. Prader-Willi syndrome, Frohlich' s syndrome), or that you are just overweight from excessive eating. It is important that you have your problem sorted out as soon as practical, and I would suggest that you ask your general practitioner for a referral to an endocrinologist so that you can be fully investigated and diagnosed.
