Question: | I have a scar around the nipple after breast enlargement surgery eight years ago. Can laser surgery remove this scar in the same way as they remove tattoos? |
Answer: | When a laser is used to remove a tattoo, it acts to burn the skin. Applying a hot iron to a tattoo would have the same effect. A scar results as a result of the burn, and destroys, distorts or disguises the tattoo. Lasers must therefore be very carefully used in the treatment of tattoos or any other skin condition.
A scar around the nipple would not be appropriately dealt with by use of a laser. Plastic surgeons can almost certainly deal with the problem by re-excising the scar, and carefully repairing the wound, or by using creams on, or injections into the scar.
Discuss the matter further with your GP, and arrange for a referral to a plastic surgeon.
