Question: | What are fungi? What sort of infections do they cause? |
Answer: | Fungi are members of the plant family, and those that infect humans are effectively miniature mushrooms. Only a limited number of fungi can cause infections in humans. The vast majority of fungal infections occur on the skin to cause conditions such as tinea (ringworm and athlete' s foot), but other commonly affected areas include the vagina (thrush), mouth and gut. In rare cases, fungal infections can spread to the lungs, brain and other internal organs. These infections are much more serious. |
