Question: | My bowels have changed. I used to be regular every day, and now I have trouble going twice a week. What could be the cause? |
Answer: | Constipation has many causes that can vary from reduced physical activity, depression and a change in diet, to pregnancy, diabetes and thyroid disease. The cause that should concern you most is the possibility of a tumour in the bowel. Any change in your habits, be that constipation or diarrhoea, can be caused by a growth. There may be a simple explanation for your particular problem, but there is only one way to be sure, and that is to have a thorough check-up with your doctor.
Do not start using laxatives inappropriately. Once the cause of your constipation is known, the correct treatment can commence.
