Question: | My hands go numb and white in cold weather, and I have to wear gloves during winter. Is there any treatment for this? |
Answer: | Treatment of Raynaud' s phenomenon is difficult as there is no cure, only control. Keeping the hands warm is the first step, but far easier said than done, and not always effective. Alcohol in low doses may be useful. A wide range of prescription drugs can be used to dilate the tiny arteries in the fingers which go into spasm to cause the blanching and pain.
As a last resort, operations to cut the nerves that cause the artery spasm can be performed.
Those who suffer from this distressing condition should be under the regular care of a doctor so that all avenues of treatment can be tried to give the best possible relief.
