Question: | I am in my 70s, and for many years have suffered with finger tips that crack and split and almost bleed. St is usually worse in winter, and very painful. Can you suggest a treatment? |
Answer: | The first treatment would be the copious use of moisturising cram on the finger tips to nourish the dry skin. You cannot overuse such creams, and the cheap ones such as Sorbolene and urea cream are just as good (if not better) than the expensive perfumed ones.
If this is inadequate, a mild steroid cream can be tried as well as the mois-turiser. This will require a doctor' s prescription, so the doctor can check die fingers to ensure that there is not some other disease causing the problem.
Poor circulation to the finger tips, fungal infections and contact dermatitis are just a few of the many possible causes of cracked and dry finger tips.
