Question: | My fingers go numb when ! play the piano. What can i do about this? |
Answer: | There are many overuse syndromes in vogue at present, including RSI (repetitive strain injury).
Any form of rapid repetitive movement can cause inflammation in the arm, leg or finger involved and therefore numbness, pins and needles, pain and even weakness. It may be due to the tendons or ligaments being strained by overuse; or nerves may be damaged by rapid joint movement or the blood supply in the tiny atteries that supply the fingers may be inadequate. It is important to find out the cause of your problem, and then appropriate medications can be prescribed.
Sometimes simple remedies such as changing the position in which you play or the height of the piano stool can change the angle of your wrist to prevent constriction of nerves or arteries. If this is unsuccessful, arrange to see your doctor immediately after a long practice session so that he/she can assess the problem at first hand.
