Question: | I am 50, and my doctor has advised me to have a hysterectomy. Will I still get my periods, and will the operation make any difference to my sex life? |
Answer: | A hysterectomy is removal of the uterus (womb), and since your period is the monthly shedding of the lining of the uterus, you will not have periods after the operation.
There is now some evidence that stimulation of the cervix (the opening to the uterus) during sexual intercourse causes some women to feel pleasure, so that there may be a slight difference in how you respond to love-making after the operation. For most women who have sexual difficulties following hysterectomy, the cause is psychological rather than physical.
