Question: | My doctor has recommended a hysterectomy for my bad periods. I have tried all sorts of pills for the last two years, but is this operation really necessary? |
Answer: | The last resort in controlling heavy and painful periods is a hysterectomy, but this is sometimes the only practical option. All other methods should be tried first, and this will include hormones, fluid tablets, hormone-blocking agents and pain killers. If these are not working adequately, or the woman is taking large amounts of medication, or the side effects are unacceptable, a hysterectomy may be a very reasonable option.
The woman involved should be in middle life, obviously should not want any further children, and should be having periods that are sufficiently severe to affect her lifestyle. In these circumstances I feel it would be cruel to refuse this operation, which can be very successful in enabling women to lead far more free and comfortable lives.
