Question:I suffer from irritation and inflammation around the anus, accompanied by a wetness in the area. My personal hygiene is carefully attended to, and I can' t feel any lumps like piles. I am an otherwise healthy thirty year old woman. Is there any treatment available which will eradicate it?
Answer:The possible explanations for your anal discomfort include excessive perspiration (more likely if you are overweight) and a constant discharge of mucus from the anus. Excess mucus is produced by the gut if it is inflamed, and this mucus can slowly leak out through the anus. A condition called proctitis can cause this inflammation, and can be detected by a doctor inserting a small instrument (a proctoscope) into the anus to inspect the lining of the gut. If this is excessively red and moist, you will have proctitis. The condition can be treated by using steroid suppositories (tablets inserted through the anus) to settle down the inflammation (and therefore the mucus production), but your doctor will probably also perform further tests to exclude any cause for the proctitis developing.
