Question: | What can cause problems in falling pregnant? My husband and I have not used contraception for almost two years, and we' re starting to get worried. |
Answer: | Firstly, remember that fertility is a joint property, not just a feature of the male or female. One third of infertility is due to the male partner. It takes two to tango!
In the male, the causes of infertility include premature ejaculation, undescended testes (which fail to work because of overheating), injury to the testicles, mumps infection of the testes, testicular and sperm tube venereal infection (eg. non-specific urethritis, gonorrhoea), chromosome abnormalities, and hor monal disorders.
Infertility in the female may be caused by failure of the ovaries to develop (eg Turner syndrome), endometriosis, abnormal development of the uterus, pelvi> inflammatory disease, venereal infections of the Fallopian tubes (eg. chlamydia gonorrhoea), hormonal imbalances, and in rare cases a reaction to the husband' sperm can develop.
Strangely, infrequent sexual intercourse, due to both partners having careei life or study stresses is sometimes the cause. It may be all too easy to miss thos< few days a month when the woman is fertile if you are only having sex every fev weeks.
