Question: | When I do knee bends, my joints make a noise, and a friend told me to drink a lot of milk. Is this true? I am 55 years old, but very fit after years of doing Karate, Judo and Tai Chi. |
Answer: | Milk is an excellent food, full of essential vitamins and minerals, as well as carbohydrates, fats and protein, but it cannot lubricate noisy knees!
Joints can grate, click or pop under pressure (such as bending), and the cause varies from one sound to another. Grating noises can be due to arthritis or cartilage damage, clicks can be caused by ligament or cartilage damage, and popping noises may be quite normal (as in popping finger joints) and caused by a sudden reduction of pressure on the lubricating fluid wirhin the joint.
With a long history of martial art exercises, you could have some chronic knee damage, but the only way to find out is to have the knee carefully examined (and possibly x-rayed) by your doctor. Once a correct diagnosis is made, appropriate treatment may be commenced.
