Question:I have a tennis elbow. How can this be treated?
Answer:Tennis elbow is inflammation on the inside of the elbow from excessive strain to the muscles inserted into the arm bone at that point. The most important type of treatment is rest, and this should be started as early as possible, and continued until the elbow has completely recovered. If rest is inadequate, the condition may persist for many months. Anti-inflammatory tablets may also prove useful, and in severe cases injections of steroids are used. Physiotherapists have skills that may be of benefit to some sufferers. There are also specially designed straps with a pressure pad attached to them, that can be worn on the affected elbow. These can prevent, as well as treat, tennis elbow. Eventually the condition will settle, but often not until the patient has been forced to give up sport for far longer than wished.
