Question: | My husband had his tonsils out at seven years of age. Recently he became very sick, and was told a tonsil had regrown and he had quinsy. Is this possible, as I have never heard that tonsils can regrow? |
Answer: | When tonsils ate temoved, it is impossible for the surgeon to remove 100% of the tissue, as it is embedded into the side wall of the throat. Usually, 95% at least is removed, but it is possible for the remaining tiny amount of tonsil tissue to become repeatedly infected and slowly grow over many years.
Quinsy is the formation of an abscess in the side of the throat underneath an infected tonsil. Surgery is usually needed to drain away the pus, and any remnant of tonsil tissue can be removed at this time.
