Question: | My husband sneezes for an hour or more every morning when he wakes. How can he stop this? |
Answer: | He is probably suffering from vasomotor rhinitis or hay fever. Vasomotor rhinitis is an excessive secretion of phlegm in the nose and sinuses due to changes in temperature, emotion and posture. Hay fever is caused by allergies to pollens, dust etc.
If your husband takes a long-acting antihistamine tablet each night, it should prevent the reaction in the nose, and therefore prevent his sneezing fits. New, non-sedating antihistamines are now available. Special nasal sprays containing a steroid (available only on prescription) may also help the problem if used regularly.
