Question: | My 17 year old son lacks energy and seems almost lethargic most of the time, although he eats well and plays sport. What could be the reason for his lack of energy? |
Answer: | 17 year old boys are usually growing and developing rapidly, eat huge amounts of food, and most seem ro remain extraordinarily thin. They may be undertaking normal activities, as your son is with school, sport and other activities, but it is also quite common for them to tire easily and sleep ten or more hours a day while they grow several centimetres in height during the year.
Girls seem to go through this developmental stage earlier and more gradually, and stop growing by about 16 or 17, while boys may grow until 19.
It would be sensible to ask your general practitioner to give your son a physical check up, but the vast majority of boys are found to be perfectly normal, and just passing through an interesting developmental phase.
