Question:We have an hereditary disease in our family, and I am concerned about my children developing it. Where can I get further information?
Answer:Start with your general practitioner. Some inherited diseases have regular and easily predicted patterns of inheritance that he or she will be able to work out for you. If the problem is complex, the GP will refer you to a specialist physician, or to one of the genetic clinics that are established in some major teaching hospitals. It is always wise for prospective parents who have relatives suffering from a disease that may be inherited to have adequate genetic counselling. Doing this before pregnancy may prevent heartbreak later, as some diseases can be detected before birth, and treated accordingly.
