Question:I plan to fall pregnant soon. Should I see a doctor for a check-up first?
Answer:Before a woman embarks on her first pregnancy, a physical examination may reveal unknown factors in her health that may have a significant effect on her ability to fall pregnant or successfully carry a child. High blood pressure, diabetes, back disease and gynaecological problems are examples of these. A woman should be taught how to examine and care for her breasts, and one of her regular Pap smear tests should be performed. A A blood test for a past history of Rubella (German Measles) infection will be arranged and a vaccination given if necessary. Advice on correct diet and eating patterns, weight control and bowel habits can all have a bearing on fertility. Even details on how to get pregnant (no, I don' t mean what position or sexual technique, but at what time of the month to try) can be useful. A pre-pregnancy check-up is of great benefit to all women. It is a custom that should be encouraged.
