Question: | I had some bleeding early in my pregnancy, and had to rest in bed for two weeks. Will this increase the risk of an abnormal baby? |
Answer: | No! Exhaustive studies have not shown any increase in infant abnormalities after bleeding in early pregnancy. The bleeding may have been due to a slight separation of the placenta from the wall of the womb as it was growing, and almost certainly did not involve your baby directly.
About 30% of all pregnant women suiter from some degree of bleeding during pregnancy, and some have quite severe bleeds without losing the baby.
A bleed may indicate the early stages of a miscarriage, but not necessarily so. There is no treatment available for a threatened miscarriage except bed rest. Women who have repeated miscarriages may be given additional hormonal or surgical treatment by a gynaecologist.
