Question:Every time I have sex with my husband, I am in agony for two or three days afterwards because of burning when I pass urine. How can i prevent this?
Answer:This is a very common problem, and one that is relatively simple to overcome. When you have sex, the urethra (tube from the bladder to the outside) becomes bruised and inflamed. It is also easy for bacteria to be massaged up the tube into the bladder. In these circumstances an infection can occur, which leads to your discomfort. The problem is more common with those who are not used to having sex (thus honeymoon cystitis), in those having very frequent and gymnastic types of sex, and in those who have infrequent sex. The way to prevent it is to have something to drink before sex, and then pass urine immediately after sex to remove any germs that have entered. Douching should not be done. If this is not sufficient, you can use a urinary alkalinising agent either all the time, or on days when you expect to have sex. There are numerous brands of these (eg. Ural, Citravescent) available from chemists, and they come as a powder which adds to water to make a flavoured drink. They make the urine unpalatable to the bacteria that like to breed in your bladder. As a last resort, your doctor can give you special antibiotics to use long term to overcome the problem. A small number of women may need surgery to correct a defect in the area.
