Common in suddenly hospitalized or relocated elderly patients due to disorientation.
Symptoms of Acute Brain Syndrome
Elderly person who is psychotic, and has clouding of consciousness, impaired thought processes, poor short-term memory, strange illusions, misinterpretations, anxiety, irrational fears, loss of interest in life, restlessness and apathy. Some patients experience hallucinations that involve the sensations of vision, touch, hearing and smell.
Tests for Acute Brain Syndrome
Diagnosed by psychiatric assessment.
Treatment for Acute Brain Syndrome
Careful nursing, psychotherapy and medications (eg. haloperidol).
Complications of Acute Brain Syndrome of its treatment
Sedatives may aggravate confusion.
Likely Outcome of Acute Brain Syndrome
