Adenitis
Medical Questions » Adenitis
Name: Adenitis |
Also known as: Lymphadenitis |
An infection or inflammation of one or more lymph nodes, usually in the neck, armpit or groin. |
Causes of Adenitis Lymph nodes are collections of white cells designed to remove and destroy invading bacteria and viruses. Sometimes the infection overwhelms the lymph node, or cancer spreads from another part of the body, causing it to become painful and enlarged. |
Symptoms of Adenitis Red, sore and swollen lymph nodes, and the patient develops a fever and feels ill. |
Tests for Adenitis Blood tests may be performed to identify serious infections, or in cases where cancer is suspected. |
Treatment for Adenitis If the infection is bacterial, the treatment is antibiotics. Viral infections, such as mumps and glandular fever, will need to run their course, with rest and pain-killers the only treatment. Cancerous lymph nodes need to be surgically removed.
|
Complications of Adenitis of its treatment An untreated infection may cause an abscess (see separate entry). All lymph nodes that cause discomfort must be examined by a doctor as the adenitis may be due to a cancer. |
Likely Outcome of Adenitis Most bacterial infections settle well with antibiotics. Cancer prognosis varies depending on the type. |
