Causes of Autism May be an abnormality in the development of the brain due to damage during growth as a fetus, at birth, or in the first years of life. Absolute cause is not known. |
Symptoms of Autism Child fails to develop normal social skills, language skills and communication skills. Often excessively preoccupied with a particular type of behavior and very resistant to change or education. Repetitive habits are common. Occasionally have exceptional talents in a particular area (eg. maths or music: the idiot savant syndrome: see separate entry). |
Tests for Autism No diagnostic tests, but CT brain scans sometimes show nonspecific abnormalities. Electroencephalograms (EEG) are usually normal, except in those who develop epilepsy. |
Treatment for Autism No effective treatment.

Complications of Autism of its treatment Epilepsy occurs in up to 30% of cases. |
Likely Outcome of Autism Remain mentally retarded and require care throughout their life. Life expectancy is close to normal. |
