A serious fungal infection of the lungs and skin. |
Causes of Blastomycosis The fungus Blastomycoses dermatitis which is found in the soil in tropical areas, may be inhaled in dust. Person to person infection does not occur. Far more common in men than women. |
Symptoms of Blastomycosis Severe pneumonia-like illness with fever, mucus producing cough, muscle pains, tiredness, weight loss and skin sores. |
Tests for Blastomycosis Sputum samples and swabs from skin sores can be taken in an attempt to identify the responsible fungus. Chest X-rays are abnormal. |
Treatment for Blastomycosis Regular injections into a vein with potent anti fungal drugs (eg. amphotericin B, ketaconazole) for several months.

Complications of Blastomycosis of its treatment May spread to brain, bone, joints, lymph nodes, prostate gland and cause skin ulcers that are slow to heal. |
Likely Outcome of Blastomycosis Difficult to cure. Mortality rate 15%. |
