An extremely contagious form of viral hemorrhagic fever (viral infection of the blood) that occurs in central and west Africa, and the Philippines.
Causes of Ebola Virus
The virus is spread by monkeys and from person to person in conditions of poor hygiene. Outbreaks have occurred in the Congo, Sudan, Ivory Coast and the Philippines. Epidemics are often hospital based. Good personal hygiene and using masks and gowns prevents the spread of infection.
Symptoms of Ebola Virus
Muscle pains, headache, sore throat, joint pains, diarrhea, vomiting, red eyes and abnormal bleeding.
Tests for Ebola Virus
Blood tests show significant abnormalities.
Treatment for Ebola Virus
No cure or vaccine for prevention, and treatment is restricted to managing the symptoms and nursing care. Patients must be nursed in strict isolation.
Complications of Ebola Virus of its treatment
Internal bleeding causes death.
Likely Outcome of Ebola Virus
Fatal in about 80% of patients.
