Epistaxis
Medical Questions » Epistaxis
Name: Epistaxis |
Also known as: Nose Bleed |
Air is warmed and moistened as it enters the body by blood vessels lining the nostrils which are very close to the moist surface. The lining can dry out and crack, or it can be damaged easily. |
Causes of Epistaxis Injury to the nose, blowing the nose too vigorously, drying with hot dry weather, local infections inflame the mucous lining of the nose, rheumatic fever, measles, polyps or tumors in the nose, high blood pressure, high
altitude and most often for no apparent reason. |
Symptoms of Epistaxis Bleeding from the nostrils(s) and sometimes down the back of the throat. |
Tests for Epistaxis If repetitive, investigations to exclude specific causes performed. |
Treatment for Epistaxis Sit (not lie) still and hold the nostrils firmly without letting go for ten minutes. Ice applied to the nose will also help. If bleeding continues after repeating above three times, medical attention is necessary to find and treat the cause of the bleeding (eg. cauterizing the bleeding point with heat, removing a nasal polyp).
|
Complications of Epistaxis of its treatment Very rarely repeated severe nose bleeds may cause anemia. |
Likely Outcome of Epistaxis Depends on cause. Most settle quickly with treatment. |
