An unusual skin inflammation. |
Causes of Erythema Nodosum The cause is unknown, but may be a reaction to certain bacterial infections, medications (eg. penicillin) or more serious underlying diseases (eg. leukemia, tuberculosis, syphilis, hepatitis B or ulcerative colitis). |
Symptoms of Erythema Nodosum Very tender, painful red lumps that develop on the front of the leg, usually below the knees. Less commonly affected areas include the arms, face and chest. Patients also have a fever, joint pains and general tiredness. |
Tests for Erythema Nodosum Diagnosis confirmed by skin lump biopsy. Other tests are done to find any underlying cause. |
Treatment for Erythema Nodosum If a cause can be found, this is treated (eg. infection) or removed (eg. medication). No specific treatment, but steroids and pain-killers may ease the symptoms.

Likely Outcome of Erythema Nodosum Lasts about six weeks before slowly disappearing. No serious aftereffects, but recurrences are common. |
